Amref Health Africa: Leap-frogging Africa’s health transformation through digital technologies

Sometimes being behind the curve is advantageous when the rules of engagement change and disruption happens.  Before the year 2000 telephony in Africa was archaic.  However the lack of investment in legacy systems meant the barrier to change was lower, resulting in rapid adoption of mobile phones once the device cost barrier was overcome by scale and competition.  Could Africa’s health sector be at the cusp of a similar transformation?  The lack of investment in expensive legacy equipment and tools could mean rapid adoption of newer, cheaper, and innovative digital technologies for health, without the pain of discarding older expensive equipment.
