Dr. Francis Okechukwu Ohanyido is a renowned physician, social entrepreneur, and development strategist with over two decades of experience in public health, development, and humanitarian aid. He is the founding Director-General of the West African Institute of Public Health (WAIPH) and President Emeritus of The Academy of Public Health. Dr. Ohanyido has held key roles in international organisations and collaborations, advocating for universal health coverage, primary health care, and health technology. His impact goes beyond traditional healthcare spheres. Some career highlights include: – Advisor, Senate Committee on Health – Country Director, CMDS Center Nigeria – Project Support Manager, USAID’s COMPASS Project – Chief of Party, Synergy PMP (multicounty) – Consultant for WHO in the Africa Region – Senior Technical Consultant to the Majority Leader, House of Representatives Nigeria – National Pneumonia Coordinator of Nigeria, USAID’s TSHIP – National NTD Advisor (Representative), Sabin Vaccine Institute’s Global Network, Nigeria – Senior Policy Advisor (Global), The ONE Campaign – Country Director, Vitamin Angels Nigeria He played a crucial role in the passage of Nigeria’s National Health Act in 2014 and the success of marketshaping for local production of commodities under the United Nations Commission for Lifesaving Commodities for Women & Children (UNCoLSC). He holds roles in the World Bank’s Global Financing Facility’s CSO Steering Committee, Harvard Business Review (HBR) Advisory Council, Africa Digital Health Network Taskforce, BMJ Public Health Journal and the Africa CDC’s Journal of Public Health in Africa. A Medical Council-certified Physician and chartered professional manager, an adjunct professor, he holds a Medical Degree from the University of Jos, along with postgraduate education in various disciplines such as genetics, nutrition, public health, international development and administration, which includes an MBA Finance and Investment. He is also a Fellow of several prestigious bodies including UK’s Faculty of Public Health, Royal Society for Public Health, Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and the Academy of Public Health. He has pursued continuous professional development, participating in executive courses at renowned institutions such as Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, IS Global of Barcelona, and the United Nations University.
